Looking back - Enterprise Data World 2009

Enterprise Data World 2009

Enterprise Data World 2009
April 5-9 2009 - Tampa, Florida, USA

The description said: "Enterprise Data World (Formerly The DAMA + WILSHIRE Conference) is the business world’s most authoritative vendor-neutral educational event about data management.  This year’s program will be bigger than ever before, with more sessions, more case studies, and more can’t-miss content.  Join us in Tampa this April for 200 hours of in-depth tutorials, hands-on workshops, and sessions and keynotes to take you beyond “up to speed” and into the front of the pack."

It was a fair description - everyone seemed to be having a good time, and learning a lot. The Trip Report will be available very soon, and there will be some photographs - despite the economic climate, 600 people came along. A formidable crowd, when everyone got together (and we all found plenty to talk about over lunch).

Get Involved With Standards!

From Judith Newton, DAMA-I VP for DM Standards

Most DAMA members are aware of the standards relevant to our profession:  database standards such as SQL, the ISO Metadata Registry Standard, XML and its many schema specializations and applications (MatML, NIEM) are just a few.  Only a few of us participate directly in standards development – many from lack of access, some because they feel that you must be among the very best experts in an area to contribute.

As the Vice-President for Data Management Standards for DAMA International, I would like to allow more of our members to participate in the standards development process.  I feel that we have a reservoir of talent and ideas in DAMA Chapters that can contribute to many standards efforts.  There are two ways that we can work towards this end:

First, I would like to build a list of DAMA members already involved in formal standards development efforts sponsored by ANSI, ISO, IEEE, OMG, and other SDO's and consortia pertaining to data resource management.  This will not only help us identify the expertise available within DAMA but also a complete picture of all the standards that pertain to DRM.

Second, any DAMA member who is not currently involved in a formal standards development effort but who has interest, suggestions, or other contributions to make to building DAMA's collective understanding of DRM standards, is welcome to make suggestions.  These will be passed on to the relevant standards participants.   Use the contact link from the website: VP_DM_Standards@DAMA.ORG to do this.

I would also invite everyone interested in building a complete picture of DRM-related standards to visit the CMAPS system of standards descriptions: "International Standards Relationships" viewable from the DAMA-I website (click on Education and Research/Data Standards from the homepage) and suggest additions and extensions based on their own standards interests.  These will be added as time and resources allow.

I am arranging to have an informal meeting of those interested in discussing this initiative at the Enterprise Data World Conference.  I hope to see you there!

For more information, or to participate, please contact Judith: VP_DM_Standards@DAMA.ORG, or check out our Standards page.

Prospective employers should go into the 'Employers/Recruiters' side of the front page, create an account (if you don't already have one), and then post jobs and review cvs. The charges can be seen on the 'Products/Pricing' link, before you commit to anything.

Please do not send us emails asking us to post jobs - we can't do that for you!

Prospective employees should look at the 'Job Seekers' side of the front page. All the job seeking functions are free.

Joining DAMA

DAMA is organised into a number of chapters, found in many countries around the world.

To find your nearest chapter, look on the Chapter List, and follow the link to their website. If that doesn't help (maybe there isn't a chapter near you?) then we also have a Global Chapter which covers everyone who doesn't live near one of the geographically-based chapters.

Setting up a DAMA chapter

If you don't have a local chapter, and would like to find out more about setting one up, then please contact the VP of Chapter Services for more information.

Conferences and Courses

DAMA members qualify for discounts on a range of courses and conferences. Some of them are shown here; if you run one that isn't, contact us to tell us about it. We also like to hear about courses that support the CDMP qualification, and Calls for Papers for conferences - a lot of our members like to share their knowledge and experience.

More conferences, courses and meeting can be found on the DAMA Events Calendar.
