Monday, November 30, 2009, 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Meeting

Title:

Master Metadata Management Using an ELDM

Speaker:

John Biderman, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care

Presentation for Download

Description:

The burgeoning practice of Master Data Management seeks to identify or design authoritative sources for major information domains (such as customer, product, reference code sets, etc.) within an enterprise where those domains may be replicated or originated in many systems and databases. But what about Master Metadata? What do we have for the glue that binds together metadata from multiple sources in which the same business concepts are represented in many different physical designs and taxonomies? In our observation, this is a missing component in most metadata management strategies.

At Harvard Pilgrim Health Care we employ our Enterprise Logical Data Model (ELDM) as the semantic master to which metadata from all our documented systems get mapped. The ELDM is an application-neutral representation of nearly all the data entities and attributes required to run the business, and names everything in business terms.

In this session we will describe how the ELDM provides a global taxonomy and glossary that serves many uses as Master Metadata:

  • to identify common data elements wherever they may reside
  • as a template for describing data requirements
  • as an integration tool to define source-to-target mappings
  • as a tool to evaluate the applicability of packaged solutions
  • to provide a semantic model that can be used in defining canonical messages in our Service Oriented Architecture

Who should attend:

  • Data modelers
  • Master data management practitioners
  • Metadata and taxonomy management practitioners
  • Enterprise data architects
