DAMA New England Meeting: 06/22/2010

Tuesday, June 22, 2010, 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Meeting

Title:

Up in the Cloud: Service-Oriented Architectures and the Future of Computing - A Data-Centric Approach

Speaker:

David Lawrence, Data Architecture Consultant, President, MVF Associates, Inc.

Description:

Cloud Computing is an approach to application development that has the potential of radically transforming the nature of the software development process by abstracting from the underlying technological infrastructure and describing the solution in a manner which is easily comprehended by business users. Cloud computing allows for the rapid development of distributed software solutions by means of reusable components which are defined in business, rather than technical, terms. Cloud computing is best understood in the context of what is known as a Service-Oriented Architecture, or SOA.

This presentation will explain SOA and Cloud Computing from a data-centric perspective and present the pros and cons of using these methods, based on my client experience and an examination of existing software tools, protocols, and cloud-based applications. It will examine key principles in SOA design, including the role of Event-Driven Architecture, the types of different services, the relationship to existing development methodologies such as Object-Orientation and Transaction Processing, and the role of the Canonical Data Model in message design. Finally, it will explain why the data professional is in the position to play the lead role in the development of a Service-Oriented Architecture.
