What Requires a REP License -  and What Doesn't.

Teaching data management or preparing students for the CDMP® exam does NOT require a REP license if: (a) the instructor uses the DAMA-DMBOK® as a required purchased text and each student buys their own copy, or (b) the instructor uses only materials that fall within fair use or the Creative Commons license applicable to certain DAMA figures and diagrams, and (c) the course does not use DAMA International's registered marks, trademarks, or branding to describe itself or imply DAMA endorsement.

A REP license IS required if: (a) DAMA-DMBOK® content is reproduced or distributed to students without each student purchasing their own copy, (b) DAMA-licensed course materials, visuals, or text excerpts beyond fair use are incorporated into training, or (c) the provider wishes to use DAMA's® registered marks, the REP logo, or describe their course as officially DAMA®-endorsed or DAMA®-aligned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I become a DAMA Registered Education Provider?
A: Apply via our REP application form, and you will be contacted for the next steps.

Q: Is there a fee for the program?
A: Upon acceptance into the program, the applicant will pay a yearly fee. As of 2022, that fee is USD 1,500 per year but can change.
Q: What do I do if I am not certified to the Master Level or above? What if my certification is out of date?
A: All instructors that give CDMP® exam courses must be certified at the Master Level or above for the current version of the exams. If you are not yet certified, you will need to attain certification before applying for this program.
Q: How long does this process take?
A: If all instructors are certified, the process to become a REP takes as little as 60 business days from receiving the completed application form.
Q: Can I use the DMBOK content for my non-registered CDMP® courses?
A: No. The use of DMBOK® content in courses or training events is licensed exclusively through the DAMA REP program. Unauthorized use of DMBOK content outside of the program is a violation of intellectual property rights.
Q: How long does the approval process take?
A: If all instructors meet the certification requirements and the application is complete, the approval process takes approximately 60 business days from receipt of the completed application.
Q: What training programs can a DAMA REP offer?
A: REPs can offer a variety of training courses, including:

  • CDMP Certification Preparation (Associate, Practitioner, and Master levels)
  • Core Data Management Courses aligned with DMBOK®
  • Specialized Data Management Topics, including Data Governance, Data Quality, Metadata Management, and more

Q: Can my organization become a DAMA REP if we focus on general data-related training but not CDMP exam prep?
A: Yes. While the program is designed for CDMP exam preparation, DAMA REPs can also offer DMBOK-aligned training in various data management domains.

Q: Can universities or publicly funded academic institutions become REPs?

A: Yes. Universities and publicly funded academic institutions are welcome to apply for REP status under the same standard process and requirements that apply to all providers. This means all instructors delivering CDMP® exam preparation must hold CDMP® Master certification before the institution may apply, and the institution must meet all other REP obligations including the annual fee and alignment of course materials with the current DAMA-DMBOK®. Universities that wish to teach data management or data governance using the DAMA-DMBOK® as a required course textbook -  where each student purchases their own copy -  do not need a REP license to do so, provided they do not use DAMA International's® registered marks, trademarks, or branding in a way that implies official DAMA endorsement, and do not reproduce or distribute DMBOK® content beyond what fair use permits. DAMA International® recognizes that academic institutions represent an important pathway for developing the next generation of data management professionals, and is currently developing a formal academic partnership framework to better support universities seeking deeper collaboration. Institutions interested in exploring this pathway ahead of its launch are encouraged to contact registered.education@dama.org.

Q: Can a DAMA® chapter run CDMP® exam prep events or Pay If You Pass (PIYP) programs at a university or other external venue?

A: Yes. A DAMA® chapter may organize CDMP® exam events, including Pay If You Pass (PIYP) programs, at a university campus or any other external venue as a chapter-led activity. In this model, the chapter - not the host institution - is responsible for the event and must ensure that all applicable DAMA® requirements are met. Specifically, if DAMA-licensed course materials are used in any associated instruction or exam preparation, the instructor delivering that content must hold CDMP® Master certification. The host venue's faculty or staff do not automatically qualify to deliver licensed DAMA® instructional content by virtue of the venue arrangement alone. Chapters interested in setting up a PIYP event should contact their regional coordinator or visit the PIYP program page for details

Q: Are there any restrictions on marketing my DAMA REP courses?
A: Yes. DAMA REPs must follow DAMA International’s branding and marketing guidelines, including proper use of DMBOK®, CDMP®, and the DAMA REP logo. DAMA International reserves the right to review and approve promotional materials to ensure compliance.
Q: Where do I go if I have other questions?
A: Please e-mail registered.education@dama.org
